Critique 1

The Picture is untitled but it is the album cover for Brand New’s cd Deja Entendu. It’s a picture of an astronaut floating above water with birds flying behind it. It doesn’t say what the medium(s) are for the picture but it just looks like regular paint was used.
The use of orange and yellow make the background aesthetically pleasing. There is assymetrical symmetry in the picture as both sides are not identical but both carry even visual weight. There is a large contrast of subject matter as astronauts, birds, and water all have nothing to do with each other. The emphasis is on the spaceman as he is directly in the center of the picture. There is a wide value scale because there is black and also a paleish yellow. In the foreground there is a floating spaceman. In the middleground there is a generally calm body of water with ripples throughout it. In the background there is a dusky sky with flocks of birds all travelling to the right and the outsides of the picture gets darker around the edges and lighter in the middle, another reason there is emphasis on the spaceman. Even though the subject matter is all unrelated, they go harmoniously together because their colors all complement eachother. There’s a lot of space around the astronaut leaving him isolated and all alone. It is hard to interpret the meaning behind the picture other than isolation and being out of place.
The story I see within this piece of art is this: a man feels lost and out of place. He has no direction, and even if he did he has no clear way of getting there. He feel’s like a spaceman with no ship, just floating. And not even floating in the right place as he is still on earth.
